The Importance of Partnering With a Toronto Respite Caregiver

Caring for a loved one is extremely rewarding but can quickly become overwhelming. It isn’t easy to meet all of the care needs for someone you love while meeting your own needs, those of your spouse and/or children, taking care of your home, perhaps working outside of the home, etc.

It’s also important to carve out time for self-care. Yet, with only 24 hours in a day, there often isn’t time to do it all, at least not while maintaining your own health and well-being. When you try to function under this level of stress, you place yourself at risk for caregiver burnout, depression, and a host of physical and mental health problems.

What Is Respite Care?

Respite, short-term care involves engaging the services of a professional caregiver to work in tandem with you to ensure a loved one’s care needs are seamlessly met while allowing you time to step away to tend to other responsibilities or activities you enjoy.

Respite care works best when scheduled on a regular, routine basis. This varies from person to person, ranging from a few hours each week to full days or even extended care while you travel.

While your respite caregiver is with your loved one, you can step away to:

  • Go for walks

  • Take a class

  • Run errands or take care of your own responsibilities

  • Visit the doctor or take time to rest during an illness

  • Visit with other family members or friends

  • Relax at the park or coffee shop with a good book

  • Whatever brings you joy or peace!

What Kinds of Services Are Included in Respite Care for the Elderly?

Why Families Trust The Care Company for In‑Home Senior Respite Care

We realize it’s not easy to entrust the care of someone you love to a respite caregiver. After all, you know the person better than anyone and can provide care unlike anyone else. Yet it’s also important to realize that no one can do it all independently.

At The Care Company, our caregivers are extensively trained and experienced and truly have a heart for caring for older adults. Our intensive hiring process ensures that each person is fully interviewed, background checked, and verified as someone who is trustworthy, dependable, skilled, and compassionate. Our policy is to hire only those we would wish to have caring for our own family members at home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Respite Care

To further assist you in understanding what to expect when you engage the services of one of our respite caregivers, we’ve compiled some of the top questions we receive and their corresponding answers.

  • What if my loved one balks at the idea of a caregiver? This is actually quite common. It can feel threatening to one’s independence to bring a caregiver into the home for the first time. It can also bring about feelings of denial that help is needed. We have found that a good way to introduce a caregiver is by starting with one or two types of care that would be especially appealing, such as light housekeeping and meals. How nice it is to have someone change the bed linens, tidy up the home, and prepare dinner, too! Once an individual realizes the benefits of home care and is comfortable with their caregiver, they are often open to adding additional services.

  • Will the caregiver do things the way we would like them to be done? Absolutely! We are never there to come in and take over. We listen to and follow your directions and ensure tasks are done to your liking.

  • What if we don’t like the caregiver you provide? Our caregiver matching process means considering the individual’s personality, likes/dislikes, interests, and more, typically resulting in a fast and lasting bond between the two. However, if for any reason you would prefer a different caregiver, we will send a replacement – no questions asked. We aim to ensure your loved one is completely happy with their caregiver and that you have the peace of mind you need and deserve to step away from your care duties.

  • How soon can services begin? We can schedule your in-home consultation at your convenience, and once we’ve prepared your customized plan of care, services can begin immediately.

  • Will we have the same caregiver for every visit? Consistency and continuity are always one of our top goals. We strive to provide you with the same caregiver as often as possible. However, there are times when a caregiver is ill or unavailable during the time your family member needs care. In those instances, we will provide an equally skilled and qualified caregiver.

  • Do you only provide respite care services for the elderly? We’re here to help anyone of any age who needs support to remain safe at home! We offer special needs care for children and adults, specialized dementia care, and end-of-life care, to name a few. Contact us to let us know about your challenges, and we’ll share with you more about how we can help.

What Our Clients Have to Say

We regularly receive positive feedback from those we serve, affirming the difference our care makes in their lives. Here’s just one of many to let you know the quality of care you can expect when working with The Care Company:

My 92-year-old mother is very happy with her companion. Maja has made my mother feel very comfortable and cared for. During her visits, together they manage to do many small jobs that help my mother feel positive at the end of the day. I also appreciated the attention given to her and her needs during the intake process.
